The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program grades ships on a 100-point scale, and the numbers reflect conditions seen at the time of inspection, not a permanent label.
Clint Henderson said cruising is still a relative bargain even as growing demand and higher operating expenses push fares higher, which helps explain why passengers pay close attention when a major ship lands below the pass mark. In that context, Norwegian Dawn’s 84 stands out not just as a bad day for one vessel, but as the only failing score among the 2026 inspections reviewed.
There is also a limit to what the score can tell readers. Carnival Breeze earned a perfect 100 earlier in the year before falling to 86 in a later inspection, while Sun Princess, MSC Meraviglia and Amadea each scored 89 and Carnival Breeze, Kydon and National Geographic Sea Lion each scored 86.
Norwegian Cruise Line moved quickly after the March inspection. Five days later, it sent a detailed report to the CDC showing corrective measures put in place after the ship scored poorly. What the public record does not spell out is the specific sanitation failures that drove Norwegian Dawn down to 84, leaving the score itself as the clearest measure of the problem and the company’s response as the next part of the story.
