US meteorologists said in June that El Nino has returned, and NOAA says the pattern could persist until spring 2027. That gives the current event an unusually long runway by seasonal-climate standards and raises the odds that it will shape weather well beyond one storm cycle.
People in the US are searching now because El Nino is the kind of climate pattern that can alter what winter feels like, even if the exact regional outcome is not yet pinned down. It is the warming of sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, and it comes around every two to seven years, usually lasting several months before easing.
The last El Nino ran from June 2023 to May 2024, about 12 months. Before that, the most recent La Nina stretched from late 2020 to early 2023, roughly 31 months. Put together, those back-to-back swings show how quickly the Pacific can move from one phase to the other, and why forecasters watch the cycle so closely when winter planning begins.
El Nino does not just sit over the Pacific Ocean. It disrupts weather patterns worldwide and pushes up global temperatures, which is why meteorologists connect it with heavy rainfall, storms, floods, droughts and soaring temperatures in different places. Those swings can damage crop yields and ecosystems, strain health systems and deliver major economic losses, even though the pattern itself is a natural one.
The friction is that the same natural cycle being tracked for winter also arrives in a year when forecasters are warning it could help drive record global temperatures and even the hottest year ever recorded in 2027. That does not mean El Nino is the only force at work; it means its return adds heat and uncertainty to an already warm baseline.
