Maria and Giuseppe turned a hospital room into a wedding venue on 22 October 2026, marrying inside the Medicina Interna ward at the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Perugia. Maria, 74, was hospitalized when the civil rite took place.
The ceremony came after 45 years of living together, a delay that made the marriage feel less like a beginning than a formal recognition of a life already shared. Giuseppe, 79, stood beside her as the couple said yes in the room where she was being cared for.
What made the day unusual was not only the setting, but the way it was arranged. The rite was civil, with two officials from the Comune di Perugia, and the couple chose the coordinator nurse, one nurse and two doctors as witnesses. That kept the ceremony inside the hospital's own routine of care, even as it marked a personal milestone.
Matteo Pirro directs the Medicina Interna ward, and the wedding also gave the unit a different kind of visibility: not as a place defined only by illness, but as one that could hold a moment of continuity, affection and dignity. For Maria and Giuseppe, who had already built a life together over decades, the marriage simply gave legal form to what had long been true.
The question left hanging is why they waited so long. The facts do not answer that, and they do not need to for the scene to land: after 45 years side by side, the couple married where Maria happened to be hospitalized, and the hospital room became the place where their long partnership was finally registered as a marriage.
