Jacob Chase wanted the sixth Insidious movie to behave like a restart, not an obligation. With Insidious: Out of the Further in theaters Friday via Sony Pictures Entertainment, the director said his pitch was that the film could not feel like just another entry in a franchise that has already gone through five previous movies.
That is the point of the new title, and the reason it is being searched now. Chase said his goal was to make the movie feel like an original film that simply happens to have Insidious in the title, a soft reboot built to welcome fans back without pretending the series was beginning from zero. He said he is a big Insidious fan, but also that five movies is a lot and that the sixth had to earn its place.
The story centers on Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, who can astral project like others in the series and can also bring demons back from The Further into the real world. Gemma is dealing with trauma passed down from her mother, played by Laura Gordon, while trying to protect her own daughter, played by Island Austin. That setup keeps the film inside the franchise’s rules while giving Chase room to treat it as something new.
Chase’s instinct for that balance did not come from horror franchises alone. His last horror feature was Come Play in 2020, and before that he built Bigworm Sherwood Scare by hand in Northridge, Calif., a charitable 1,800-foot maze that operated for two years from 2012 to 2014. He said all the proceeds went to cystic fibrosis research and aid, and that the experience taught him how to scare people. He also said film and a live attraction are surprisingly alike because both require the filmmaker to take the audience by the hand and guide them.
The franchise may be getting a fresh start on screen, but the open question is how much of that new direction belongs to Chase and how much is the result of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s broader plan for the series. What is clear for Friday is that Insidious: Out of the Further is arriving not as another routine sequel, but as a deliberate attempt to make Insidious 5 feel new again.
