Daniel Guerrero Martínez, 53, and José Luis Portelas Villegas were found alive on Wednesday after spending five days lost at sea, bobbing in the Pacific Ocean inside their cooler about 150 miles off the coast of Chiapas. The rescue ended a search that began when the two fishermen disappeared after their boat sank.

The men had left Paredón, Chiapas, last Thursday on the Camaronera and lost contact the following day. What followed was a widening effort that started with boats sent out to retrace the fishermen’s route, then added an aircraft and later Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy. By the time Martínez and Villegas were located, they were still afloat inside the cooler that had kept them alive long enough for help to reach them.

The navy said surface and air units were deployed under the Trinomio concept, a ship-interceptor-aircraft approach that helped expand the search, locate the fishermen, bring them to safety and reunite them with their families. Both men were rescued before being airlifted to a hospital, but they were suffering from severe dehydration after going without food or water while trying to stay afloat.

That is what makes the rescue so striking and so hard to square with the rest of the account. They survived long enough to be found, yet the conditions that kept them alive also left them badly weakened. Initial reports pointed to wind and bad weather as possible factors, while it remains unclear whether engine trouble played any role in the sinking.

An investigation into what went wrong has now been launched, and that is where the story turns next. The rescue answered the immediate question of whether the men would be found, but the larger one remains: why a fishing trip that began last Thursday ended with two men adrift for five days, clinging to a cooler in open water.
