State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance has started sending a record $5 billion dividend to qualifying auto insurance customers, opening a payout that will reach millions of drivers nationwide. The company says the distribution is the largest of its kind in its more than 100-year history.
The timing matters because State Farm said millions of customers had already received payments in a July 31 release, and more distributions are still going out. The payout covers more than 49 million State Farm Mutual auto vehicles nationwide, making it one of the biggest customer returns the insurer has ever attempted.
Customers who had an active personal auto insurance policy in 2025 are eligible, and each payment is based on the premium paid for a qualifying policy that year. The percentage varies by state and runs from 4% to 10%, which means the final amount depends on where a policyholder lives and how much premium they paid on the covered policy.
State Farm is notifying qualifying customers about a pending payment either by email or through a letter in the mail. Those with an email address on file will be given instructions to choose how they want to be paid, while customers without an email address on file will receive a check by mail.
The company has also acknowledged the pace of the rollout. Because the distribution covers more than 49 million auto vehicles, it said the payment process will take several months to complete nationwide, but it did not give an exact date for when the full round of payments will be finished.
That missing finish line is the part customers still need to watch. State Farm has begun paying out the dividend, and the money is moving, but the insurer has not set a public completion date for when every eligible customer should have the check, email instruction or mailed notice in hand.
