Justin Fields will start at quarterback for the Chiefs against the Rams in Saturday’s preseason opener at Arrowhead Stadium, while Patrick Mahomes waits to take the field until he is closer to 100%. Reid said Fields will open the game, Nussmeier will replace him and Chris Oladokun will finish it.
The move gives the Chiefs a clear look at the backup plan in a game that starts at 3:00 p.m. and comes with several familiar names likely to stay on the sideline. Reid said it is unlikely Kenneth Walker, Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice will play, and the rebuilt offensive line may or may not see action.
That makes the opener less about polishing a full first team and more about managing bodies in the first of three preseason games. The Chiefs are trying to get work where they can without pushing Mahomes before he is ready, a choice that keeps the most important position on the roster tied to recovery rather than urgency.
For Andrew Armstrong, the setting makes the day more personal. His family is here, and he said this has been his favorite team since he was a little kid. Armstrong added that he is here to play football and wants to be around the seriousness of the team, not worry about city life.
There are still other roster spots worth watching. Jack Cochrane and Jeffrey Bassa are expected to get the majority of the linebacker looks up the middle tomorrow, while Jacob De Jesus has drawn notice for his work on kickoff and punt returns with UNLV. Dave Toub mentioned De Jesus in mid-week remarks as a player he is excited to see.
Reid also left room for some of the lineup to breathe while refusing to promise much of anything. “Listen, there’s a chance they get in and play — how much, I can’t tell you that — if at all,” he said. That is the clearest sign the Chiefs are treating the preseason opener as a measuring stick, not a dress rehearsal. Mahomes remains the biggest name on the sideline, and until he is closer to full health, the question is not whether he can play, but when the Chiefs decide the risk is finally low enough to let him do it.
