The Cubs-White Sox game stopped in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night at Wrigley Field, going into a rain delay with the score tied 3-3. Jesse Rogers posted at 9:48 p.m. CDT that the game was in a delay, saying it was not raining yet but would be soon.

That was the story because the game had already become a late squeeze, with the Cubs and White Sox trading blows all night before the pause. Pete Crow-Armstrong opened the scoring with a leadoff solo home run in the first, then Michael Busch made it 2-0 with another solo shot. The White Sox answered through Drew Romo's RBI single in the second, Munetaka Murakami's solo homer in the third and Tristan Peters' RBI double in the fourth, before Alex Bregman tied it in the bottom of the seventh.

The weather detail added a strange edge to the interruption. At 9:52 p.m. CDT, the hourly forecast in Chicago showed no inclement weather starting at midnight, even as the game had already been sent into a delay. That left the pause looking less like a quick interruption and more like a test of patience for a contest that had settled into one run at a time.

Kevin Gausman started for the Cubs and gave up three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings before leaving with a thumb cramp in his left hand, while Javier Assad worked three scoreless innings and Caleb Thielbar added 2/3 of an inning. On the other side, Bryan Hudson opened for the White Sox before Eric Fedde took over and allowed no earned runs over 4 2/3 innings, with Huascar Brazobán and Grant Taylor handling shorter relief turns. The next question is simple: when the game starts again, it will resume with everything still there to settle.
