HUAWEI has launched the MatePad Air, a 509g tablet measuring 5.3mm thick and built around a 12-inch 2.8K OLED PaperMatte display. The new model is pitched as a PC-like AI tablet for people who want more than a basic slate but less weight than a laptop.

That matters now because the MatePad Air is aimed at the kind of work people try to do on the move: class notes, meeting decks, quick document edits and spreadsheet checks. For students and professionals, the pitch is simple. Carry something lighter, keep the tools familiar, and avoid hauling a full PC when the job is mostly reading, writing and presenting.

The display is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that argument. HUAWEI says the panel combines a 2.8K resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate, peak brightness up to 1,200 nits and slim 4.69 mm bezels that push the screen-to-body ratio to 92%. It also carries TÜV Rheinland Full Care Display 3.0 and SGS Low Visual Fatigue A+3.0 certifications, which positions it as a device built for long sessions as much as for speed.

The software package is where the PC comparison becomes more than marketing. The MatePad Air includes PC-level WPS Office and WPS AI Office, plus an AI Summarizer for PDF documents, AI Generate Slides, Smart Create and an AI Sheet Assistant. HUAWEI also says the updated HUAWEI Notes app adds AI Speech-to-Text and AI Handwriting Enhancement, while AI Tutor is available for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Biology. In other words, the tablet is being set up to handle the routine work that fills a day between lectures and meetings.

Still, the device does not read like a full laptop replacement. Its strengths are portability, screen quality and faster handling of everyday tasks, not heavy-duty computing. Even HUAWEI’s own framing points to lighter daily productivity rather than work that demands a larger PC, which is the real trade-off behind the thin design.

The MatePad Air comes in Airy Blue, White and Sakura Pink, and the Sakura Pink version includes a colour-matched stylus. HUAWEI also says the optional HUAWEI M-Pencil Pro can double as an Air Mouse, while the combined weight of the MatePad Air and the HUAWEI Smart Magnetic Keyboard is 817g. What is still missing is the practical information buyers usually need next: a launch date, pricing and where it will be sold.
