Laura Cardoso died at 98 in São Paulo on Monday night, and the news was made public only in the early hours of Tuesday on her official Instagram profile. Her wake is scheduled for Tuesday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Bela Vista neighborhood of São Paulo.

Fátima Cardoso said her mother died after feeling ill at home, and that sequence leaves one detail unanswered: the medical cause of death has not been disclosed. The timing also mattered, with the death occurring at 11:20 p.m. on Monday and the public announcement arriving just after midnight, turning a private loss into immediate public news.

Born in 1927, Laura Cardoso entered TV in 1952 and built a career that stretched across more than 60 soap operas. She was later tied to TV Globo in works such as Brilhante, Pão Pão, Beijo Beijo, Mulheres de Areia and A Viagem, and her last TV role was in A Dona do Pedaço in 2019.

Her final release came in 2025, when she also appeared in Dona Rosinha, a detail that shows her career reached the end of the line without ever really stopping. Over the years, she collected five APCA trophies, the Oscarito prize from Festival de Gramado and the Ordem do Mérito Cultural, confirming a status that made her one of the defining names of Brazilian drama.

The personal story behind that public career was just as long. Laura Cardoso was married to Fernando Balleroni from 1949 until his death in 1980, and the couple had three children, including José, who died three days after birth. That family history, now carried by Fátima Cardoso, is the private frame around a public farewell that begins Tuesday morning and leaves only the cause of death still unspoken.
