That would split a lineup Apple has long brought to market together, and it would put buyers waiting for the regular model on a much longer clock.
The timing is drawing attention now because September is still the month most closely tied to Apple’s biggest iPhone event, and has reportedly identified Sept. 9 as the likely date for that showcase.
