Sophie Cunningham Wnba Reddit Ban: r/WNBA blocks posts over trolls

r/WNBA has begun filtering posts about Sophie Cunningham, and a moderator confirmed the move after a user tried to post her name and found it blocked. The moderator said the subreddit had chosen to restrict content tied to Cunningham because it tends to attract trolls and people who are not fans of the WNBA.

The restriction matters now because Cunningham is not a random figure from outside the league. She is an Indiana Fever guard, and the subreddit is built around the WNBA and its fans. When a player becomes hard to discuss by name in that space, the moderation decision itself becomes part of the story.

A moderator told the user, “We filter content based on Sophi [sic] because it tends to bring out trolls and people who aren't fans of the W.” The same moderator added that if someone wanted to post freely about Sophie, they could go to a different sub. The exchange did not spell out every blocked word, but the user said Cunningham’s name and several abbreviations would not go through. That left the basic question hanging in plain view: a player with real fans is being filtered out of the place where those fans are supposed to gather.

Cunningham’s name has not landed in a neutral moment. She made public comments supporting keeping male athletes out of women's sports, and over the last several weeks and months the WNBA’s organization, coaches and fans have turned their anger toward her. The backlash has included booing, protests, criticism from other players and opposing coaches wearing shirts aimed at her. Her own coach also rushed to the defense of DiJonai Carrington after Carrington clotheslined her and left her with a bloody mouth.

The broader conflict around Cunningham has also pulled in bigger questions inside the league. The WNBA's official task force met to answer what is a woman, then scheduled more meetings after failing to reach a conclusion. That backdrop helps explain why her name now draws such a fast reaction online, but it does not answer the narrower issue at hand: how long r/WNBA plans to keep filtering her posts, or exactly which terms are blocked. For now, the subreddit has made its choice, and the message to users is blunt — if they want an unrestricted discussion of Sophie Cunningham, they will have to take it somewhere else.
