The promotion tapped into a complaint drivers know well. Paulina Sirtori, 23, who manages the station’s social media, said the idea was meant to ease the pressure of high gas prices a little. “The No. 1 complaint we hear from people everywhere is that gas prices are just too high,” she said. “So we wanted to really do something to alleviate that a little bit.”
That is part of why the video caught on so fast. Customers in the clip danced to Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and the station’s social feeds drew nearly 10 million views across platforms. For a gas station, that is a large audience for a simple sign and a few seconds of movement.
The idea also fits into a broader pattern of small, shareable promotions that turn an ordinary stop into something people want to watch. Earlier this year, Massachusetts’ Coffee Milano Cafe drew attention with a free coffee for anyone willing to dance for just 5 seconds. The Sunoco offer took the same instinct and aimed it at drivers feeling the sting at the pump.
Still, the joke lands with an edge. A discount for dancing can look playful, but it can also feel unsettling when the price of gas is high enough that a quick routine becomes a way to save money. That discomfort is part of why the clip moved beyond local curiosity and into a wider online conversation.
What remains unclear is how long the station kept the promotion going, and whether the viral attention changed anything beyond the views. The sign offered a simple bargain; the online response turned it into something bigger.
