Isabelle Rose Johnson was arrested Thursday in Cottondale, Florida, ending a 45-day search that had stretched across Florida, Georgia and Alabama. A U.S. Marshals task force took her into custody at a home about an hour west of Tallahassee, and officials said the arrest came without incident.
The search had been driven by a murder charge in the death of Jason Coulthart, whose body was found buried in a shallow grave in Florida on June 25. Coulthart had been reported missing May 24, and he was last seen leaving the College Condominiums on East College Boulevard in Niceville. For investigators, Johnson was the person they had been chasing ever since.
Walton County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Dustin Cosson said the case had consumed “tons and tons of man hours” during the roughly 45-day manhunt. The broader investigation also produced more than 40 subpoenas and over 20 search warrants, a measure of how much ground law enforcement had to cover before Johnson was located and taken into custody.
What has not been explained publicly is the evidence that tied Johnson to Coulthart's death. Authorities have not laid out in the available facts what led them to the murder charge, or how the investigation narrowed in on her after weeks of searching across three states. That gap leaves the arrest as a major break in the case, but not the final word.
Johnson was booked into the Jackson County Jail on Thursday afternoon and is expected to be extradited to Walton County. The arrest closes the manhunt, but the next stage of the case now turns on what prosecutors can prove once she is brought back.
