The Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego has identified the recruit who died after a physical fitness test as 18-year-old Private Aiden Craig of Texas. Craig had a medical emergency during the test on August 1 and died four days later, after being taken to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.
His death has become the latest grim marker in a training pipeline that was only beginning for the teenager. Craig was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and he was on Training Day 47 of recruit training when the emergency happened.
What has not been made public is the medical problem that struck him during the test. That gap matters because it leaves the central question unanswered even as the timeline is now clear: a recruit collapsed or fell ill during the physical fitness test, was moved to medical care the same day, and died on August 5.
The Corps has identified Craig and fixed the dates, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. For now, the known facts end where the hardest questions begin: why a healthy-seeming 18-year-old recruit did not recover after the emergency that started on August 1.
