Hawaiian Electric is telling customers across Hawaiʻi to prepare for a storm system that forecasters say could affect the islands as early as Saturday. The utility said the warning applies to Maui County as well, and it is asking people to review emergency plans, stock up on supplies and keep a close watch on weather updates.
The timing is what makes the alert land now. Wednesday’s NOAA satellite image showed cloud cover over the Hawaiian Islands at 11:40 a.m., while the storm threat remains a moving target rather than a confirmed landfall or a forecast with a hard severity call. That uncertainty is part of the reason the utility is pushing preparations before the weekend arrives.
Hawaiian Electric said it has posted preparation and safety guidance at hawaiianelectric.com/stormcenter and offers a free Handbook for Emergency Preparedness at hawaiianelectric.com/prepare. The handbook is available in English, Cantonese, Ilocano, Korean and Vietnamese, and there is also a version written for children. The company said it trains employees year-round to respond safely and quickly to storms and other emergencies, coordinates with federal, state and local agencies, and works throughout the year to strengthen its infrastructure by managing vegetation near power lines and inspecting and upgrading poles, power lines, transformers and other equipment.
That work is meant to keep the system ready, but it does not remove the risk that a fast-changing storm can still knock out power or slow recovery. Hawaiian Electric said safety remains its top priority, and it will share power restoration updates through news media, hawaiianelectric.com, its mobile app and social media accounts on Twitter/X and Facebook. The app is available for free through the Apple App Store and Google Play, giving customers a direct line to updates if the storm does turn into a weekend disruption.
For now, the key question is not whether people have been warned. It is whether the system will reach Hawaiʻi on Saturday and how much of the islands it will affect. Hawaiian Electric has already moved the public message into place. The next signal that matters will come from the weather itself, and from whether restoration updates are needed at all.
