That is the kind of production that changes how a bullpen is managed. Headrick has worked 60.1 innings for the Yankees in 2026, posted a 1.49 ERA and struck out 73 while allowing only three home runs. Outside of David Bednar, he is regarded as Aaron Boone’s most trusted reliever, which says as much about his reliability as any stat line does.
Katie Sharp noted that Headrick’s 51 scoreless appearances lead MLB, and that the total is the most by any Yankees pitcher through 119 team games in franchise history. For a 28-year-old left-hander who was claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins last February, the numbers explain why the Yankees have leaned on him so heavily. The move cost them little; the return has been a reliever who has rarely given opponents a clean inning.
That is also what makes the season feel bigger than a good stretch. A pitcher does not reach 51 scoreless outings by accident, and he does not do it while carrying a 1.49 ERA unless the command is steady and the damage is limited when mistakes do come. Headrick’s workload has moved from curiosity to central piece, even if his name still carries less weight outside Yankees games than the performance deserves.
If the season ended now, Headrick would have a case for All-Star consideration built on sustained run prevention rather than one hot month. The remaining question is whether he can keep that standard through the rest of 2026, because the Yankees have already shown they trust him in the spots that matter most.
