A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning local time, killing dozens of people and leaving significant material damage in its wake. The epicenter was near San José del Palmar in Chocó, and the quake was felt far beyond Colombia, reaching Panama, Venezuela and several provinces of Ecuador.
Abelardo de la Espriella, sworn in less than 72 hours before the quake, declared a national state of emergency and said the priority was to rescue people trapped under the rubble. He was responding to a disaster that hit while much of the region was just starting the day, turning a fast-moving tremor into a national test of response.
Julio Fierro Morales described it as the strongest quake felt in Colombia in the last decade, a measure that matters because the country lives with earthquakes as a routine fact of geology. Colombia records about 2,500 quakes a month, roughly 80 a day, but most are too small to be felt. This one was different: its size and reach made it impossible to ignore.
The depth helps explain part of that difference. The USGS placed the quake about 107 km below the surface, but the energy was still enough to shake much of Colombia and neighboring countries. In seismology, magnitude measures the energy released at the source, while intensity describes what people feel at the surface; each one-unit jump on the scale means about 32 times more energy release, so a 7.4 is not a small step from the kinds of tremors Colombia usually logs without notice.
That scale also puts Monday’s quake in the shadow of the country’s worst historical shocks. The 1906 earthquake reached magnitude 8.8 off the Pacific coasts of Colombia and Ecuador and generated a tsunami that struck much of the Pacific coast. The 1979 quake, at magnitude 8.1, hit off the coast of Nariño. Those numbers show how much larger the old giants were, but they also show why any strong quake in Colombia is treated as a warning, not a surprise.
Colombia sits where the Nazca, Caribe and Suramericana plates meet, on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and the Nazca Plate keeps subducting beneath the South American Plate at 55 to 60 millimeters per year. That slow collision is what keeps producing earthquakes across the country. For now, the immediate question is not whether there will be more shaking; it is how many people can still be reached before the rubble shifts again.
