John Fetterman used a July 19 television appearance to push back against Donald Trump’s renewed talk of 2020 election fraud, saying the president should move on and focus on something constructive. The Pennsylvania senator said Trump was still dragging up claims about an election he said had already been settled.
“You’re the president. Do something positive, and you are talking about 2020,” Fetterman said on ’s State of the Union. He said the issue had been “settled over six years ago,” and argued that the debate was “deeply unhelpful” because it distracts from more urgent matters. His remarks were the latest public rebuke of Trump’s election messaging after the president used a July 16 primetime address to repeat claims that the election system was broken and vulnerable.
Trump went further in that address, alleging that China tried to influence the 2018 midterms and the 2020 presidential election, and that Beijing compromised voter data and stole 220 million voter files from states across the U.S. He said the effort was meant to favor Joe Biden and described it as the largest compromise of election data in history, though he later downplayed China’s role and said he believed China has changed since Biden’s election.
Fetterman’s response was blunt. He said Pennsylvania elected Joe Biden in 2020, called the state’s vote “absolutely secure, fair and accurate,” and said there was no evidence behind claims that more than 250,000 migrants were registered to vote. He added that he would reconsider some of the issue if evidence emerged, but said he did not expect to see any.
The clash matters because Trump’s fraud claims have remained a central part of his political message, even as the Department of Justice found no evidence of widespread voter fraud. Fetterman also tied his criticism to Pennsylvania itself, saying the result reflected “the voice of Pennsylvania” and noting that the state’s 67 counties are mostly deep red counties that have not encountered the kind of fraud Trump describes.
What remains unanswered is the evidence behind Trump’s latest accusations. He pointed to China, voter files and a sweeping security breach, but did not lay out public proof in the remarks Fetterman was responding to. For now, the senator’s line is clear: the vote was real, the case is closed, and the argument belongs in the past.
