Instagram was hit by an outage today that mainly broke Instagram Messages, with users saying DMs were not going through for around two hours starting at 6:30 am. Reports on Downdetector climbed past 2,000 early in the outage and later reached around 4,000.
That made the problem big enough to be felt as more than a routine app glitch. Downdetector reports on Instagram went past 3,000 for the first time after the outage began, while smaller spikes also appeared on Messenger and Facebook, with around 500 reports on Messenger and 300 on Facebook.
The timing matters because people were seeing clear signs of a live disruption while Meta's status page still showed No Known Issues. On paper, that suggests nothing was wrong; in practice, thousands of users were trying to send messages that would not move, and the numbers kept rising fast enough to show the problem was spreading beyond one account or one device.
What made this outage stand out was how quickly the report count built and how slowly it settled. After the first surge, Downdetector updates on Instagram later moved up by less than 100, which points to a disruption that was already easing even though the cause had not been explained and the status page had not caught up.
For now, the unanswered question is not whether Instagram Messages failed for a large number of people. It is why the outage happened, why Meta's own status page did not reflect it, and how quickly the service can be brought back to normal when direct messages are the part that stops working first.
