HBO has abruptly halted filming on The Last Of Us Season 3 in Vancouver from June 1 through June 28, stopping production without giving any details. The pause comes while the new season was already underway and headed toward a planned wrap on Nov. 27.
The timing matters because The Last Of Us has become one of HBO’s biggest ongoing shows, and this season is moving ahead with a major shift: Kaitlyn Dever is set to lead as Abby, with the story expected to follow the character’s three-day journey to Seattle. Production on the season began on Mar. 2, 2026, under the working title Calm Current, and the series is expected to premiere in 2027.
The halt is landing now against a crowded calendar in Canada, where Vancouver is one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup, which starts on June 11 and runs until July 19. Canada will stage 13 matches split between Toronto and Vancouver, creating a period in which large-scale production logistics are likely to be under pressure. For a series filming in the city, the overlap adds a practical complication to an already unexpected interruption.
What has not been explained is why the pause was ordered at all. Filming had already started, the schedule had a clear end date, and yet the production has gone dark for nearly a month with no public reason attached. That silence stands out because the season is already in the middle of a shakeup: co-creator Neil Druckmann has officially exited the show, Casey Bloys has said Craig Mazin will be the sole showrunner for the next entry, and the project is being steered more squarely by Mazin alone.
The series, based on the video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog, first premiered on HBO in 2023 and drew strong reviews before Season 2 prompted a renewal for Season 3. With the focus moving to Abby and the finish line still set for Nov. 27, the unanswered question is not whether filming resumes, but what forced HBO to stop it in the first place.
