Sara Cox says next week will be the final week of her Radio 2 Teatime show, drawing a line under a run that she called “the most glorious seven years” of her career. Monday, she said, marks the start of Teatime’s final-ever week.
The timing is what makes the announcement land now. Cox is already confirmed as the new host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, replacing Scott Mills, and she has made clear that the handover is coming soon — even if she cannot yet say exactly when the new programme will begin.
“New Breakfast Show incoming guys. Incoming, brace, brace, brace!” Cox wrote, adding that the brand new Sara Cox Breakfast Show will start at some point, “but I can’t tell you when.” She called herself “ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed” to be taking over one of Radio 2’s best-known slots and said it has been a dream to host the Breakfast Show since she joined the station.
That leaves listeners with a brief overlap in which one chapter is ending and the next is still behind closed doors. Cox has said the change is “a big secret under my hat,” and while she is counting down to Teatime’s last week, the launch date for Breakfast has not been confirmed.
The move also closes the book on Scott Mills’s breakfast run after his last appearance in late March. Mills was dismissed by the after new information emerged following an investigation into his personal conduct, and the broadcaster has said it had been aware of allegations against him since 2017. He said an allegation was first made in 2016, that he fully cooperated with a police investigation in 2018 and that he did not intend to comment further.
For Cox, the shift is both abrupt and carefully managed: Teatime is ending next week, Breakfast is next, and the only thing missing is the date. For Radio 2 listeners, that is now the story — a familiar voice is about to move, but the station has yet to say exactly when the morning begins.
