Tulsa set a Guinness World Record for the on Saturday, May 30, 2026, but hundreds of registered drivers never made it onto the route. More than 5,000 people signed up for the , yet less than 1,000 cars did not make it into the parade.

The record was certified from 3,596 cars out of 4,300 in the parade, a number that made the milestone official even as many paid participants were left on the outside. For drivers who had spent the day waiting to join the procession, the record came with a sharp divide: a place in the history books, and no place on the road.

That is why the complaints landed so quickly. , the promoter tied to the event, said thousands were turned away at the gate and said the gathering was badly unprepared for the turnout it drew. In a statement, Vice Grip Garage said it was “deeply saddened, completely gutted, and ultimately embarrassed” that thousands were denied the chance to take part in the world-record parade run, adding, “Since certain parties have chosen not to accept responsibility, I will.”

The crowding was not supposed to unfold that way. Drivers were set to arrive between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., then organizers extended the arrival window to 11 a.m. and officially closed the lineup at 11:07. Even so, some participants still were ruled out by the because their cars did not meet certain criteria, and others were turned away after arriving too late to get into the lineup.

said any checked-in driver who could not enter the Cruise route would have the opportunity to request a refund of the registration fee through a message sent to their registered email in the coming days. He also said those drivers remain official world-record holders and are considered full participants in Tulsa’s Route 66 Capital Cruise.

The parade was part of the Route 66 Capital Cruise in Tulsa, and Vice Grip Garage said attendance grew to more than double the original expectations because of its role in promoting the event. The remaining question now is not whether Tulsa set the record, but how many of the excluded registered drivers will actually get their money back, and how fast the refunds will move once the emails go out.

Vice Grip Garage said it would do better, and said, “Stay tuned.” For the drivers who were there and still could not get in, that promise is the only part of the record still left to come.
