Las Vegas police said Saturday they arrested a teenage girl after three horses were intentionally injured with a sharp object at an equestrian event on the 9700 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard. The suspect was found in a nearby hotel, taken into custody without incident and later transferred to Clark County Juvenile Hall.
Police were notified around 2:07 a.m. after reports of an injured horse, and detectives later determined that all three horses had been hurt in a way that appeared deliberate. Authorities said the girl had access to the barn area and may have used a knife to inflict multiple injuries. The horses are not believed to face life-threatening injuries, but the damage will likely keep them from competing in the event.
The case drew attention because it unfolded during the 2026 National Barrel Horse Association event at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa, where online reports quickly spread that horses had been stabbed. The NBHA later said the incident involved the mistreatement of a limited number of equine athletes by an event competitor, and said that person was removed and placed in the care of authorities. South Point also confirmed an incident took place and said all involved horses are safe.
That split in language matters. Police described the animals as having been intentionally injured, while the event group framed the episode as mistreatement rather than using the more violent account circulating online. What is not yet clear is what, if any, charges the teenager will face, and whether prosecutors will treat the case as a juvenile matter tied to a single event or as something broader. For the horses at the center of it, the immediate question is simpler: the injuries may not be fatal, but they are likely enough to take them out of competition.
