Bungie says the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 will arrive on June 9, 2026, closing the door on active development for the long-running game while keeping it playable afterward. The studio said the update is part of a shift that will move its attention toward new games and a new beginning.
That date matters because players now know when the current era ends. Bungie said it has spent almost twelve years exploring the Destiny universe with players, and after The Final Shape the shared worlds had reached the time to live beyond Destiny 2. The company also said Destiny 2 will remain playable, much like the original Destiny is today, which makes the announcement less of a shutdown than a handoff.
On June 9, the final update will take the form of Destiny 2: Monument of Triumph, which Bungie said will be available to all players. The studio said the update will broaden the annual Moments of Triumph celebration across Destiny 2 and will include a collection of features and surprises across all activity types. Bungie also listed Sandbox: New Abilities and Ability Updates as part of the release.
The Monument of Triumph update is built to make the game welcoming for players who return after the main development push ends. Bungie said Legendary Marks will come back from ages of triumph past and be earned by completing a game-wide array of Triumphs, unlocking free armor ornaments, accessories, weapon engrams and more. Players who range widely in their deeds will also be able to earn an additional Title and armor ornament set.
The unresolved question is what kind of support Destiny 2 will get after June 9. Bungie has said the game will stay playable, but it has not spelled out the maintenance, update cadence or long-term plan beyond that point. What is clear is that June 9, 2026 marks the end of active live-service development for one of gaming’s most durable franchises, even as Bungie keeps the world itself alive.
