British-Nigerian rapper Skepta has called on celebrities and the international community to help draw attention to injustice in Nigeria, saying the country needs help amid a rise in insecurity.
In a now viral video, Joseph Adenuga said there is “so much injustice in Nigeria” and added, “Nigerians need help.” His remarks land at a time when concern over security in the country has sharpened, turning his appeal into a public call rather than a passing comment.
Skepta, whose real name is Joseph Adenuga, asked for people to speak up on behalf of Nigerians and said, “We need people to speak up for us as well.” He urged support for the country in plain terms: “Please, help us,” he said, framing the issue as one that should not stay within Nigeria’s borders.
What gives his comments force is that he tied them to the way Nigerians carry themselves under pressure. He said Nigerians are resilient and make everything look good, but he also said that resilience should not be mistaken for self-sufficiency when injustice and insecurity remain unresolved.
The rapper also signaled that he intends to keep pressing the issue. He said he would speak up for injustice at his shows, verbally or with images whenever he can, suggesting this viral plea may be the start of a longer public campaign rather than a one-off intervention.
That leaves the sharper question in view: which specific abuses and security failures he wants the wider world to confront. For now, Skepta has put his name and platform behind a direct appeal, and he has made clear he does not plan to stop using them.
