San Diego Weather: Clouds linger Wednesday before warmer weekend returns

San Diego weather will stay stuck in a stubborn marine layer on Wednesday, with most coastal and valley areas remaining under clouds all day and only limited clearing by late afternoon. Wednesday’s highs are forecast to reach 65-69 degrees at the coast and 65-68 degrees inland, while the mountains stay much cooler at 52-63 degrees and the deserts warm to 82-85 degrees.

The cloud cover is tied to a storm to the north that is separating from the jet stream and lingering over Central and Southern California through Friday. That setup is keeping the region in a stretch of marine layer weather, with patchy mist or drizzle possible overnight and in the morning through Thursday morning. Any drizzle that does fall through Thursday should amount to just a few hundredths to 0.10 inches, but the gray sky may be enough to slow the morning routine for commuters and early travelers.

The roughest conditions are away from the coast. A remains in effect for the mountains and deserts until 5 a.m. Thursday, with westerly winds of 20 to 35 mph and gusts of 45 to 65 mph. More clouds, patchy drizzle and gusty winds are expected in those areas as the storm hangs back over the state, while Thursday is expected to act as a transition day with slightly better clearing.

That improvement should become more noticeable Friday into early next week, when faster clearing and warming temperatures are expected. This weekend, temperatures are forecast to climb back near 70 at the coast, into the 70s and a few 80s inland, into the 70s in the mountains and into the mid to upper 90s in the deserts. Next week should bring even warmer weather as high pressure builds, with more 70s at the coast, 80s inland, mountain temperatures nearing 80 and desert readings reaching the 100s.

The pattern is a familiar one for this stretch of the season: clouds first, then a turn toward sun and heat. By the end of the week, the question is not whether San Diego weather will improve, but how fast the coast and inland valleys will break out of the gray.
