Grimes made Visions in 2012 under a strict deadline from 4AD, and she says the pressure pushed her through the album at a “psychotic pace.” The record became her breakthrough, turning a musician who had been building a fan base for years into an industry darling.
That break did not come out of nowhere. Grimes had started on MySpace, and her early work was rough, DIY and often experimental, the kind of catalog that earned curiosity long before it earned wide attention. Visions was her third record, but it was the one that put her name in a different lane entirely.
The weight of the album came from how quickly it was made. Grimes has said she skipped the demo phase, wrote and recorded most of the songs as one-shot tracks and, in at least one case, finished a song within a day and left it as it was. She has also said she was skipping meals and relying on amphetamines to get the record done. For a project that would later define her, it was built on speed, exhaustion and refusal to polish too much.
That roughness became part of the appeal. Grimes later said, “I hate unfinished things,” while also describing Visions as “quite obviously amateur-sounding.” Those comments fit the record’s odd place in her career: it was a polished breakthrough made from material she has since described as imperfect, even amateur, but that imperfection helped give it its charge.
The song “Oblivion” was the track that brought the mass influx of attention. Grimes said it was about feeling paranoid and terrified after a sexual assault, and the song’s emotional force helped widen the audience for the album. By then, the story of Visions was no longer just about how it was made. It was about how quickly a raw, handmade record could move from cult interest to a much larger public response.
What matters now is that the album’s reputation rests on the same contradiction Grimes has described for years: speed and control, roughness and breakthrough, exhaustion and reach. Visions did not become important despite its ragged edges. For a new audience, those edges were the point, and Oblivion was the song that made the wider world hear them.
