Thomas Tuchel will name his final England squad for the 2026 World Cup on Friday, trimming a 55-man provisional list to 26 players for the tournament in North America. The announcement is the biggest step yet in his bid to deliver the trophy England have not won in 60 long years.
Tuchel began work in March 2025, and Friday’s cut will show how he has settled on the core of a group he has spent 15 months assessing. The England manager’s brief was plain from the start: get the Three Lions over the line at the 2026 World Cup, where only 26 players can travel.
The sharpest decisions are expected around the number 10 role, where Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze are described as likely lock-ins. That would leave little room for others who have had a look in, including Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, both of whom were involved in the March camp. Palmer has had fitness issues this season, while Foden has been out of form, and neither made a particularly strong case in those March outings.
Morgan Gibbs-White has pushed himself back into the conversation by scoring 11 Premier League goals since the turn of the year. He was overlooked in March, but that form gives Tuchel another option if he wants a more competitive battle for the role behind the main attacking line.
There is also a live debate over the forward line. Tuchel is reportedly considering taking three centre-forwards to North America, a sign that he wants cover as well as certainty. Harry Kane is a guaranteed starter up front barring an unmitigated disaster, but the question is who backs him up if England need a change in the knockout rounds.
Ollie Watkins is pressing his case at the right moment. He was effective as an understudy at Euro 2024 and has hit form at the right time in a difficult season, which could make him a stronger option than players who have been more visible but less convincing in the recent run-in.
Friday will not answer every question, but it will tell England whether Tuchel trusts continuity or decides the road to the World Cup needs more specialist depth in the positions that matter most. After 15 months in charge, the manager is close enough now that every omission will feel like a choice, not a delay.
