’s pick to be US ambassador to Australia, , told senators on Wednesday that a strong relationship with Canberra gives Washington an edge over China in the Indo-Pacific.

Brat said that if confirmed, his three priorities would be critical minerals, defence co-operation and partnership in the Indo-Pacific, laying out a mission he cast as central to US strategy in the region. He also said the relationship with Australia is crucial to efforts to break Beijing’s stranglehold on critical minerals processing.

The nomination comes as Washington looks to deepen ties with one of its closest partners in a part of the world where influence is increasingly contested. Australia sits at the centre of that effort, both as a security ally and as a potential lever in the race to secure supplies of minerals needed for advanced technologies and defence industries.

Brat’s testimony also put China squarely at the heart of the job. He described Beijing’s military build-up as unprecedented, framing the ambassadorship not as a ceremonial posting but as part of a broader competition for power across the Indo-Pacific.

That makes the Senate’s eventual decision more than a routine personnel matter. If Brat is confirmed, he would arrive in Canberra with a clear mandate: reinforce the alliance, push on critical minerals, and help turn Australia’s role in US strategy into something more durable than talking points.
