Michigan has landed a commitment from Lake Nona defensive back Charles Woodson Jr., the son of former Wolverine great and Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound three-star, per the Rivals Industry Rankings, announced for Michigan after drawing offers from Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Kentucky and others.
Woodson said, “It was a good first impression,” after Michigan’s push gave him a reason to move. He finished his junior season with 73 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass breakups, production that helped make him one of the more recognizable defensive backs in the 2027 class.
Michigan offered Woodson under the previous staff, but the newest push came after Kyle Whittingham and his staff made him an emphasis in January, sending five coaches to his school. That kind of attention mattered in a recruitment that had already drawn national interest and now sends him to Ann Arbor as a player who figures to line up at free safety.
Lake Nona has been the backdrop for a recruiting race that mixed football fit with family ties. Woodson’s father is now the defensive coordinator at Lake Nona, where the younger Woodson has continued to build his profile against a slate of Power Four programs. Michigan’s commitment comes after a strong run that included four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell and four-star Xavier Muhammad joining the class in the days before Woodson’s announcement.
The addition gives Michigan 10 commitments in its 2027 class and adds another safety to a group that already includes Maxwell Miles of Las Vegas, a bigger body at the position. Woodson brings a different look and a familiar name, and Michigan’s early work suggests the staff sees both as part of the same back-end plan.
