Apple's most anticipated smartphone of 2026 is coming this September — and the leaks are telling a story of the biggest iPhone Pro upgrade in years. The iPhone 18 Pro arrives alongside the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the long-rumored foldable iPhone, while the standard iPhone 18 gets pushed to spring 2027 in a historic shift to Apple's release calendar.
Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max Release Date: September 2026
The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the new foldable iPhone are coming September 2026. Apple is changing its iPhone timing this year — the more affordable iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will not launch until spring 2027, leaving the fall 2026 window exclusively for premium models.
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to launch at a starting price of around $999, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to start at approximately $1,199 depending on storage configuration. No official pricing has been confirmed by Apple.
iPhone 18 Pro Design: Smaller Dynamic Island, Frosted Back
The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to feature a smaller Dynamic Island as Face ID's flood illuminator moves under the display, creating a cleaner and more modern front design. Display sizes remain unchanged at 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, with LTPO+ display technology expected to contribute to longer battery life.
The rear Ceramic Shield area for MagSafe is rumored to feature a more frosted and seamless appearance on the iPhone 18 Pro models compared to the current two-tone design. The Camera Control button is also being simplified by removing touch sensitivity and haptic feedback, leaving only pressure sensitivity — a cost-reduction measure that also streamlines the button's feel.
iPhone 18 Pro Colors: Dark Cherry Leads a New Palette
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported Apple is testing a deep red finish for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Since then, aligned leaks point to the full color lineup being Dark Cherry, Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver. The existing Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue are expected to be discontinued, and there will be no black option for the second consecutive year.
A Macworld source confirmed the new Dark Cherry color in April 2026, describing it as more of a dark cherry shade with a tinge of purple rather than a straightforward red.
iPhone 18 Pro Chip: Apple's First 2nm A20 Pro
The A20 Pro chip powering the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to use TSMC's first-generation 2nm manufacturing process, compared to the 3nm A19 Pro in current models. The 2nm architecture combined with a new packaging design should deliver solid year-over-year performance gains alongside meaningful improvements in power efficiency.
iPhone 18 Pro models are also expected to feature Apple's next-generation N2 chip for wireless connectivity, building on the N1 chip's support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread networking introduced in the iPhone 17 lineup.
iPhone 18 Pro Camera: Variable Aperture Is a First for iPhone
The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models is rumored to have variable aperture — a feature never before seen on an iPhone. From the iPhone 14 Pro through the iPhone 17 Pro, the main camera has used a fixed aperture at all times. Variable aperture would allow users to control how much light enters the lens, dramatically expanding creative control in both bright and low-light conditions.
Apple has started ramping up its supply chain for the new variable aperture camera system expected to debut in September. Samsung is also reportedly working on a new three-layer stacked image sensor — referred to as PD-TR-Logic — intended for the iPhone 18 lineup, which would mark the first time Samsung has supplied image sensors to Apple, breaking Sony's long-held exclusive hold on that supply chain.
iPhone 18 Pro Connectivity: 5G Satellite Internet via Amazon Leo
Apple's third-generation C2 modem is expected to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro, bringing full 5G satellite internet connectivity for web browsing without Wi-Fi or cellular networks — a dramatic expansion beyond the emergency-only satellite features available on current iPhones.
As of April 2026, Apple is teaming up with Amazon to provide this satellite internet service. Amazon announced it acquired Globalstar — the previous provider of iPhone satellite connectivity — meaning future iPhones will fall under Amazon's Leo satellite network, which opens the door to full internet access over satellite rather than emergency services only.
