Ohio State is staying with Luke Fahey, and Ryan Day made clear the true freshman will keep running the offense while Julian Sayin remains out with a throwing-shoulder issue. Day said Sayin may not return this season or ever, leaving Fahey in line to keep the job moving forward as Ohio State prepares for Oregon this coming weekend.

The timing matters because Ohio State is coming off a 30-18 loss to USC this past weekend, a game in which Day said the team did not help Fahey enough. He said Fahey had the right approach, made plays and showed command of the huddle, but also noted that the situation around him was difficult for a young quarterback and that the operation was not all perfect.

Day said he has gone all in on Fahey and that, as long as Sayin is out, the freshman will be the backup moving forward. That makes the next stretch clear: Fahey is not being eased in as a temporary patch. He is the quarterback Ohio State is leaning on right now, with Oregon next and no immediate sign of a change.

What Day described was less a clean offensive debut than a survival test. He said there were things that happened operationally that were a lot for a young quarterback, and that Fahey had some misthrows, though he expected that. He also said Fahey extended plays, kept going to the end and showed a good attitude on the sideline.

Day said he went to players on the offensive line and the wide receivers to ask what it was like in the game, and he said they were very positive about Fahey’s approach. That is the point Ohio State has to solve before Oregon: not whether Fahey can handle the moment, but whether the offense around him can make that moment easier. For now, Fahey is still the answer, and Ohio State has one week to make that answer look steadier.
