San Diego State is taking Colorado back to Pechanga Arena on Saturday afternoon, ending a nearly 30-year absence from the building that once served as the Aztecs' home floor. The game tips at 12:30 p.m. on USA Network and is part of the National University Bill Walton Classic.
The return gives longtime supporters a chance to see the Aztecs where many of their biggest memories were made. San Diego State played 281 games at the arena after elevating to Division I in 1970 and won 173 of them, a stretch that covered the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s before Viejas Arena opened ahead of the 1997-98 season.
Michael Brunker, who spent part of that era around the program, said he truly respected the Sports Arena. He recalled staying at a hotel on Sports Arena Boulevard before games and walking across the street, calling it almost like a road trip, even if the trip was only a nine-mile trek in practical terms. For him, the old building carried history, legacy and a sense of place that newer arenas often lose.
Brunker also remembered the rough edges that came with the experience. He said the locker rooms were spartan, that they were not like the modern rooms with individual stalls, and that the place smelled like beer but also smelled historic. He said it was the biggest thing in San Diego at the time, and that the team loved playing there anyway.
Brian Dutcher is leaning into that memory for this weekend, telling fans who remember the old days to come back. He said he has heard from the lifers who went to games at Peterson Gym and then at the Sports Arena, and that original Aztecs fans who remember those days need to return now that the team is back in the building.
The venue itself fits the nostalgia and the discomfort at the same time. It is dated and has clearly seen better days, yet it is still a functioning building that continues to host events. That is part of why San Diego State can play there again now, even after moving to Viejas Arena years ago and leaving behind Peterson Gym, which opened in 1961 and held about 3,000 fans on laminated wooden bleachers.
The old arena also carries the broader basketball history that made it a landmark before the campus moved on. The NBA's San Diego Rockets played there, the ABA's San Diego Conquistadors used it too, the San Diego Clippers played there before moving to Los Angeles in 1984, and the Golden State Warriors even played six games there in the early 1970s. The Classic also honors Bill Walton at the building where he played the CIF finals and later with the San Diego Clippers, tying Saturday's game to a much larger past. For San Diego State, the next chapter starts at 12:30 p.m., with Colorado across the court and a familiar crowd trying to make an old place feel new again.
