Ryan Day says Luke Fahey needs more help as Ohio State readies Oregon

Ryan Day said Ohio State is changing how it supports Luke Fahey after the 30-18 loss to USC, putting the true freshman at the center of the offense while Julian Sayin remains out with a throwing-shoulder issue. Day said the Buckeyes are trying to clean up the operation around Fahey before they face Oregon this coming weekend.

That matters now because Fahey is not just filling in; he is carrying the offense through a stretch in which Ohio State has no healthy answer above him. Day has already made clear that Fahey will stay the backup moving forward as long as Sayin is unavailable, and he sounded less interested in assigning blame than in fixing the structure around a young quarterback who is learning on the fly.

Day did not hide the problems after the USC game. He said the team did not help Fahey enough and that he spent the week talking to players to understand what they saw. He asked the offensive line and the wide receivers what it was like in the game, and their response, he said, was positive about Fahey's approach. He added that Fahey had the right approach, made a lot of plays, showed command of the huddle and kept extending plays even as the night wore on.

But Day also made clear that the freshman was not working with a clean sheet. He said there were operational issues that put a lot on Fahey for a young quarterback, along with some misthrows that he expected to happen. That is the gap Ohio State is trying to close before Oregon: not whether Fahey can compete, but whether the offense can give him a steadier runway when the stakes rise and the field tightens in scoring range.

Day's praise went beyond the box score. He said Fahey showed grit and toughness, kept playing to the end and had a good attitude on the sideline, even after Ohio State came up short on red-zone chances. For a team trying to recover quickly, that is the part of the performance Day seems most willing to build on. The unanswered piece is what those operational fixes will look like when the Buckeyes line up against Oregon this coming weekend.
