Borussia Dortmund are expected to turn to Fabio Silva against Elversberg on Saturday 7 November, with Serhou Guirassy set to miss out after going off injured in Wednesday’s 2-1 Champions League win over Real Betis. The change pushes Silva to the centre of the attack for Bundesliga matchday 9 at Signal Iduna Park.

That search is being driven by the state of Dortmund’s title race as much as by the injury itself. They are unbeaten in the Bundesliga and have 18 points from eight league games, level with Bayern Munich but behind them only on goal difference, so a home slip would hand Bayern a chance to open a gap at the top before the international break.

Silva has already given Dortmund a sharp reminder of what he can bring. He scored on 49 minutes against Real Betis and set up the winner, and he is now in line to lead a 3-4-2-1 with Karetsas and Maximilian Beier behind him. Gregor Kobel is set to remain in goal, with Waldemar Anton, Nico Schlotterbeck and Ramy Bensebaini forming the back three and Julian Ryerson plus Daniel Svensson operating as wing-backs.

The wider picture is less straightforward than Dortmund’s league record suggests. Emre Can has been doing individual training, while Konstantelias has a torn ACL and Lerma has had muscle issues, and none of those three was in the squad at Bayern. That leaves Niko Kovac with a narrower pool of options, even though Borussia Dortmund and Elversberg meet with very different recent form behind them: Dortmund drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich in Munich on Saturday 31 October, while Elversberg arrive seventh with 13 points from eight games after a 4-1 win over Mainz in their latest league match.

There is also a backdrop to this one that keeps the fixture from feeling routine. It is the first league meeting between Borussia Dortmund and Elversberg, and their only previous competitive game was a DFB Cup tie in October 1981, when Dortmund won 4-1. Around 8,000 Elversberg supporters are expected at Signal Iduna Park, which should sharpen the atmosphere for a match that matters for both ends of the table in very different ways.

What remains unresolved is not the opponent, but the striker. Guirassy has not been formally ruled out in the information available, yet Dortmund’s expected shape makes Silva the clear first-choice replacement if the injury keeps him sidelined. If Silva starts as expected, the test is whether he can turn one strong European night into the kind of league display that protects Dortmund’s place at the top.
