Will Estes is back in the world of Blue Bloods, and Jamie Reagan’s return in Boston Blue lands as both a reunion and a reckoning. In Boston Blue Season 2 Episode 5, which aired Nov. 6 on CBS, Estes slipped back into the role alongside Donnie Wahlberg and said the comeback “literally felt right from top to bottom.”
That matters because Blue Bloods ended in December 2024 after 14 seasons, leaving Jamie and Danny Reagan’s relationship hanging in the air. Boston Blue does not treat that gap as nostalgia. It turns it into story, pulling the brothers into a case tied to a diamond heist and a violent family feud, with two brothers hunting vengeance for their sister.
Estes said he was also “terrified” to return to the world of Blue Bloods, which gives the performance a little more weight than a simple guest appearance. He said the creators honored “what we built on Blue Bloods,” and that he did not want to change anything when he came back. There was, in his words, nothing to fix. The script fit, the scenes fit, and the character fit.
The episode uses that fit to reopen one of the show’s longest-running fractures. Jamie and Danny had often been at odds in Blue Bloods, and Boston Blue lets that old friction surface before easing into something warmer. Erin Reagan tells Jamie that someone in the family is upset that Danny moved to Boston, only for Jamie to admit he was the one who was upset about it. The reversal turns the old dynamic inside out without erasing it.
Boston Blue also gives the relationship a new mechanical reality. Jamie has been promoted to lieutenant in the NYPD since Blue Bloods ended, which means he now outranks Danny, a sergeant detective. That shift shows up in the episode’s roof-scuffle sequence, where Jamie throws an explosive off its intended course, and it pays off again in two scenes where the siblings admit how much they admire and love each other. Sean even likes seeing his father take orders from his little brother.
Estes called that shift a “great progression” and “evolution,” and the episode backs him up. Jamie and Danny are no longer just repeating an old family argument; they are moving through it with new stakes, new ranks and a softer edge that still leaves room for tension. That is why the return works. It is not a reset. It is a continuation that finally answers what had been left hanging.
And Estes has already made clear that he would come back again. He said he would return “100%” if asked, which leaves Boston Blue with the one question the episode does not answer: whether Jamie Reagan’s next visit is already being planned, or whether this reunion is the last word for now.
