The Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut the first four episodes of Season 3 on Nov. 11. The new season opens with a battle scene from its first episode, and the show is already shooting that sequence on a scale that matches the date.

What makes that release stand out is not just the calendar, but the way the season is being built around it. The battle scene was filmed for two weeks at Tilsey Farm in Surrey, with Charlotte Brändström and Vic Armstrong at the helm, while another unit worked at Shepperton Studios on a scene set in Khazad-dûm. The production has taken over nine soundstages and a backlot at Shepperton Studios, and it can run as many as four production units at once.

Patrick McKay said the series was pitched to Amazon as a singular and spectacular adaptation, and that idea appears to be guiding the way Season 3 is coming into view. The new season begins after a five-year time jump, with Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and Ismael Cruz Córdova’s Arondir leading elven warriors against Sauron’s increasing supporters. J.D. Payne said that when the story last left Sauron, he had already received the nine rings for men and given some of them out.

That is where the season’s opening conflict gets sharper. McKay said the elves are losing at the start of the season, even as a new force enters the battlefield. He also said the story had to be managed like a constant Jenga tower of schedules, with different units moving back and forth to keep a huge cinematic sequence in motion. The result is a season that begins in retreat, not triumph, even though the scale around it keeps growing.

For Morfydd Clark, that shift changes Galadriel in a way that is hard to reverse. She said Galadriel’s life in Season 3 is completely altered, adding that the character is no longer frolicking and is being faced with something she could not previously comprehend. Payne said there are fewer characters and more focus on Sauron, which means the season’s center of gravity is moving closer to Charlie Vickers’s role.

The next fixed point is Nov. 11, when the first four episodes of Season 3 arrive. The unfinished question is whether the opening stretch is being released in that pattern to match the size of the story itself, or because this season is built to hit hard from the first frame and keep moving.
