Georgia State House Elections keep 14-district balance unchanged

Georgia voters left the state's 14 congressional districts in the same partisan hands Tuesday, even as Democrats won enough seats nationally to secure a House majority. Across the state, the races were called one by one between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning, and none of them changed the balance of Georgia's delegation.

That quick finish made the result clear before the night was over. Sanford Bishop kept another term in southwest Georgia's 2nd Congressional District after his race was called at 7:59 p.m. Tuesday. Hank Johnson held the 4th District, Nikema Williams held the 5th District and Lucy McBath held the 6th District in metro-Atlanta. Rich McCormick won the 7th District, Brian Jack held the 3rd District, and Jim Kingston defeated Amanda Hollowell in the coastal 1st District after The called that race at 12:14 a.m. Wednesday.

The Georgia House result matters because it shows how cleanly the state split stayed in place even as the national map moved. Georgia has 14 congressional districts, and the calls across all 14 races left the delegation divided along existing party lines instead of producing the seat switch that national Democrats achieved elsewhere. The called every race in the state during the overnight stretch, but officials had not yet released final statewide turnout totals or certified vote tallies across the 14 districts.

That leaves the only open question a narrow one: the final numbers. The winners are set, and Georgia's delegation did not change hands overall, but the full vote totals and margins have not yet been released for the 14 districts.
