Unai Emery reached four years at Aston Villa on Tuesday with the club about to walk out at the Nou Camp against Barcelona in the Champions League. It is the kind of night that measures a project properly: not in slogans, but against one of Europe’s most established sides.

Emery turned 55 on Tuesday, another small marker inside a bigger one. When Villa appointed him to replace Steven Gerrard four years ago, the job was to steady a club that wanted more than survival. Since then, he has taken them into Europe, and Villa’s win in the Europa League in May ended a 30-year trophy drought.

That matters because Emery did not hide his ambitions. In November 2022, he said his dream was to win a trophy with Aston Villa and that his second dream, and objective, could be to take them into Europe. Those targets are already behind him. Villa also signed his latest contract in May 2024, and it runs to 2029, a sign the club has chosen long-term work over short-term noise.

The match against Barcelona is the clearest test of how far that work has taken them. Emery said Villa want to respond in games against Barcelona to see how far they are from them, and he was direct about the gap that still exists. Barcelona remain favourites because of what they have done over the last 10 years, even if Villa believe they are ready to join that company after two years of challenging at the top level in the Premier League and Europe.

Villa’s push has not come without churn. They still lost Emi Martinez, Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne in the summer, and Ollie Watkins also left for Saudi Arabia. Johan Manzambi joined from Freiburg, but the bigger point is that the squad has been reshaped while the club tries to stand beside a team led by Hansi Flick, who has won successive La Liga titles with Barcelona.

Emery once said Villa won the European Cup in 1982 and were enjoying being back in the competition while trying to repeat that success. That is the scale of the challenge on Tuesday night. If Villa come through it, the club’s argument about belonging among the elite gets louder. If they do not, Barcelona will have shown that the distance Emery keeps talking about is still real.
