North Carolina sets record early vote ahead of Last Day To Vote

North Carolina voters cast 2,816,821 ballots during the 17-day early voting sprint for the 2026 midterms, setting a record before the Last Day To Vote arrived. The total covered 35.7% of all registered voters statewide and reflected a surge that reached 97 of North Carolina’s 100 counties.

That is why the search for the Last Day To Vote matters now: the early voting window closed on Saturday, Oct. 31, and Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3, was the final chance to cast a ballot. Polls were set to open statewide at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m., giving voters one last day to get in line and vote.

The record was driven by unaffiliated voters, who made up 35% of early ballots, up from 30% in 2022. Registered Democrats held steady at 38% of the early total, while registered Republicans slipped to 26% from 31% four years earlier. That shift matters because the increase was broad, not confined to one corner of the state: early turnout was higher than 2022 in 97 counties, with Wake County leading the state with more than 300,000 ballots cast and Mecklenburg County reporting 275,954 early voters.

The pattern also showed that not every voting method moved in the same direction. In-person early voting surged past 2.7 million ballots, but mail-in turnout dropped compared with 2022, a reminder that the record came from people showing up in person rather than from every form of voting rising together. Asian voter turnout nearly doubled, turnout among voters grouped under all other races was 2.3 times its 2022 pace, and turnout among Black voters reached nearly 600,000 ballots, 1.5 times higher than in 2022.

What remains unanswered is not whether North Carolina turned out, but what the new balance among unaffiliated voters and the lower Republican share will mean once Election Day ballots are counted. For anyone still waiting, the last day to vote had a fixed answer: Tuesday, Nov. 3, and after that, the record belonged to early voting alone.
