Can I Vote Today? Harris County tops 1 million early ballots

Harris County crossed 1 million early votes on Friday, reaching 1,000,447 ballots cast before Election Day. The Harris County Clerk’s Office said at 4:30 p.m. Friday that the county had cleared the milestone, a sign that this election is drawing heavy participation before the polls even close.

That is why people are asking, Can I vote today? The answer depends on the calendar, but the bigger question is what this kind of turnout means. Steven David said Friday that participation has been running well ahead of the same point in the 2022 midterm and closer to the pace of the 2024 presidential election, which is unusual for an off-year election. He said enthusiasm comes in a lot of different ways, and that the pattern suggests a strong burst of voting at the start and another at the end.

David said 75% of the vote came from early voting in 2024, while only 25% came on Election Day. If that kind of split shows up again next Tuesday, he said, early in-person votes and processed mail ballot results could help make a lot of races clear quickly on Tuesday night, before Election Day totals are fully counted.

That speed comes with a catch. David said early voting tends to skew for Democrats, while Election Day voting tends to skew for Republicans, so a large early lead can look decisive and still shift once the later ballots come in. In other words, the early total is a marker of momentum, not a final result.

For Harris County, the next step is simple: watch Tuesday night. The first numbers are expected to come from early in-person votes and processed mail ballots, followed by Election Day totals after that. The 1 million-vote mark tells you the county is active. It does not tell you yet who has won.
