Bones Hyland gets bigger Timberwolves role after Anthony Edwards knee injury

Bones Hyland has moved from the edge of the Minnesota Timberwolves' rotation into a far larger role, and Wednesday offered the clearest sign yet that the shift is real. With Anthony Edwards out because of a knee injury, Hyland scored 13 points in 16 minutes and handed out three assists in the Wolves' 119-114 loss.

That kind of burst matters because the Timberwolves need another guard who can create offense off the bench, and Hyland was the one who answered on a night when the team scored 48 points in the first half and then fell behind 82-64 in the middle of the third quarter. He checked in there, and by the end of the period Hyland and the bench had cut the lead to 12.

The performance was more than a useful cameo. Hyland shot 4-for-7 and looked like the kind of bench scorer the Wolves have been missing, even though he had been outside the rotation to start the season and was used only in situational minutes. Terrence Shannon Jr. was the only bench guard previously in the rotation, while Ayo Dosunmu had been starting, leaving little room for another creator until Edwards went down.

That is also what makes this opportunity different from the one Hyland had last season. He averaged 8.5 points off the bench for the Wolves, but he later fell out of the playoff rotation, a reminder that the talent has always been there without always being steady enough to keep a fixed place. Now the injury has forced a clean recalculation, and Hyland is no longer being asked to simply fit in when the game allows it.

Instead, he is being counted on to help bridge what the Wolves expect will be a stretch of two months or so without Edwards. Hyland put it plainly when he said the team was loaded and had a lot of talent, but the bigger point is even simpler: Minnesota needs scoring, handling and shot creation now, and his Wednesday night was the first evidence that he can supply all three when the rotation opens up.

The unanswered piece is not whether Hyland can play minutes. It is whether he can keep this job once the roster is whole again. For now, the Wolves need him as a mainstay, and Wednesday suggested he is ready for the test.
