Friday night’s IHSAA Football Sectional 2026 opener round gave under-.500 teams their shot, and most of them did not last long. Across Classes 1A through 4A, 111 losing-record teams went a combined 30-81, while every 0-9 team lost and none survived to the next round.

That is the jolt at the center of Indiana’s all-in football tournament: every team gets a postseason chance, but the first night still sorted the field fast. Classes 5A and 6A have not started yet, so the sectionals that mattered Friday were the ones in 1A through 4A, where the opener round decided who moved on to the Oct. 30 sectional semifinals and who was done for the season.

The numbers show a split between the teams that were just below.500 and the ones at the bottom. The 4-5 teams went 12-11 and were the only group to finish above water, while the 0-9 teams went 0-13. That left no winless team still alive after Friday, even in a format built to let every program enter the bracket.

A handful of losing-record teams did break through against better records. Shenandoah, which entered at 1-8, beat 5-4 Winchester 48-14 in Class 2A. Oak Hill, at 4-5, beat 7-2 Seeger 49-21. Cardinal Ritter, also 4-5, edged 7-2 Covenant Christian 22-21 in double overtime. Greencastle, another 4-5 team, beat 5-4 South Vermillion 35-28. West Lafayette, at 2-7, beat 5-4 Northwestern 49-14, and Evansville Harrison, at 3-6, beat 6-3 Boonville 20-14.

There were also lopsided results that made the opener round look less like a coin flip than a culling. Central Noble, at 1-8, beat Manchester 40-21. Linton-Stockton, also 1-8, blanked Pike Central 62-0. Southwood, at 2-7, outlasted Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian 34-28 in double overtime. Salem beat Brown County 80-0, Knightstown beat Union City 84-0, Northview beat Frankfort 77-6 and North Posey blanked Perry Central 76-0.

One game in 1A Sectional 42 was still without a reported final at last check, but the bracket already pointed ahead. Lafayette Central Catholic beat Frontier 47-7 and advanced to face Tri-County on Oct. 30, one of the few clear matchup notes from a night that also left eight more losing-record teams on first-round byes. Jennings County, Benton Central, Western, LaVille, Tri-County, Edinburgh, Union County and North Knox were still standing because they had not played yet, and those eight were set for the sectional semifinals.

That is the basic shape of the night: the tournament stayed open to everyone, but the opener round still pushed out every winless team and most of the rest. The teams that survived Friday now move into the semifinals with one more chance to keep a season that once looked finished alive.
