Rocket Vs Mavericks opens Houston’s NBA Cup run in Dallas

The Houston Rockets walked into Dallas on Friday night unbeaten and under a different kind of pressure: how long a 5-0 start can stay clean once the schedule hardens. Their first NBA Cup game arrived immediately, with the Rockets facing the Dallas Mavericks in West Group A while Alperen Sengun was listed as GTD and Steven Adams was out.

That made the matchup more than another early-season test. Houston was searching for a sixth straight win while beginning its NBA Cup journey, and the setting mattered because the group stage leaves little room for drift. The Rockets had two home games ahead against the Jazz and Suns, but the next road stop in a couple of weeks was Denver, which meant the margin for lost ground was already thin.

Fred VanVleet was available earlier in the season, but Houston still had to manage the night without Adams and with Sengun uncertain. That is the hard part of a fast start: it can make a team look safer than it is. A 5-0 opening is real, but it does not automatically mean the group has settled into contender status, especially when the memory of a 13-4 start last season still hangs over the standings. Early wins can flatter a team right up until they stop doing that.

Dallas brought its own form into the game, having gone 3-1 since the opening-night meeting and coming off a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Mavericks’ only loss in that stretch came to the Spurs, and that kind of split record is enough to keep a group race alive even when the bigger storyline is Houston’s unbeaten start. In West Group A, the arithmetic matters as much as the scoreboard.

That is where the NBA Cup format adds its own edge. Teams are judged not only by wins and losses, but by how those wins come and how a 3-1 group record can still depend on point differential if records are level. For Houston, the first step was simply surviving the first night in Dallas with its early momentum intact. For everyone else in West Group A, the Rockets were the benchmark to chase, not the team to catch by reputation alone.
