Zaire Franklin will miss Thursday night’s game against the Panthers, and Ty’Ron Hopper has already taken his place in the lineup. Matt LaFleur made the call Tuesday, closing the door on Franklin’s return for a short-week game while the Packers reshuffle at linebacker.
Franklin’s absence matters because he has been one of the Packers’ most productive defenders this season. He ranks third on the team with 41 tackles and has added two quarterback hits, a forced fumble and a pass breakup, production that now has to be replaced on a Thursday night timeline.
Franklin missed last week after getting accidentally kicked in Thursday’s practice and was later diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his leg. The injury forced the Packers to change course quickly, and Sunday showed how they expect to cover it: Ty’Ron Hopper stepped into Franklin’s lineup spot, while Isaiah McDuffie wore the green dot in his stead. That is the clearest sign of how the Packers are trying to keep the defense steady while one of its top tacklers is out.
There is a wrinkle in the decision, though. The Packers did not place Franklin on injured reserve because they believed he could return after missing fewer than four games, which means his absence is serious enough to sideline him now but not so severe that the team has ruled out a relatively quick comeback. That leaves the Packers balancing immediate lineup help with the possibility that Franklin is back before the injury would normally trigger a longer stay away.
For now, the immediate answer is Hopper, and the unresolved question is how long the Packers will have to keep making do without Franklin. The next update will not be about whether he is hurt — that part is settled — but whether the team’s belief in a shorter recovery proves right. For a defense that has already had to adjust once, that is the issue to watch next.
