Trevor Etienne got six carries and turned them into eight yards on Sunday, a small offensive line that did little to change the picture around him. The Carolina Panthers used him late in the loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but not in a way that suggested a bigger role was coming soon.
That is why his name keeps coming up. Etienne was a fourth-round pick a season ago, and his usage has stayed light enough that his latest outing barely moved the needle. Six rushing attempts were one off his career high, which tells you how little room he has had to grow on offense even when the workload ticks upward.
The broader story is not just that he ran the ball sparingly. It is that he has touched it more as a returner than as an offensive player, 59 times on returns against 32 offensive touches. Bill Barnwell put the imbalance plainly: Trevor Etienne just hasn't played very much for the Panthers, touching the ball more often as a returner than as an offensive player. That is a rough return on a fourth-round investment, especially for a player still early in his career.
There is also no clean answer in the special-teams work that has filled much of his time. Barnwell noted that Etienne was not great as a rookie returner, and after coming off injured reserve this season he has split punt and kick return duties with David Moore and Anthony Tyus III. He has even taken a backseat on punt returns to David Moore, which makes the offensive drought look even starker.
That is the friction in his season: the Panthers have not used him enough on offense to judge him there, but the return job has not been strong enough to force the issue either. Barnwell said the fourth round is a pretty significant investment for a special teamer, and he is not sure Etienne has delivered on that shot yet. Sunday’s six-carry night was a step of sorts, but not the kind that settles whether the Panthers are ready to give him real offensive work. For now, the question is not whether Etienne played. It is whether the next game brings more than another handful of touches.
