Fedor Emelianenko says boxing fight with Francis Ngannou is a dream

Fedor Emelianenko says he would be interested in fighting Francis Ngannou under boxing rules, but only as a dream fight. The MMA legend said he could not manage a return to MMA because he has too many injuries, and added that the idea of facing Ngannou in the ring was just him thinking out loud.

The comment matters because Emelianenko is now 50 and has never boxed professionally, yet he is putting his name beside one of the sport’s most recognizable heavyweights. He competed in 47 professional MMA bouts, built his reputation through PRIDE FC and later claimed the Strikeforce heavyweight belt in 2009, which is why even a casual mention of a crossover bout carries weight.

Ngannou is the reason the idea has caught on again. He defeated Ciryl Gane in a heavyweight title unification bout at UFC 270 in 2022, left the UFC by his own choice, then signed with the PFL. After that, he boxed Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, nearly upsetting Fury on the scorecards in his first bout under boxing rules.

That timeline is what makes Emelianenko’s comments land today. Ngannou has already shown he can move between MMA and boxing, and he returned to MMA in May when he knocked out Philipe Lins during the first MVP MMA event on Netflix. Emelianenko, by contrast, is drawing a line between the two sports: boxing is something he says he could try, while MMA is beyond what his injuries will allow.

For now, the proposal is only that — a proposal. Emelianenko made clear that the matchup was not a formal announcement, and there is nothing yet to show that Ngannou or any promoter has taken the next step. The fight exists in the space between a dream and a booking, and the gap between those two things is still wide.
