AFC Bournemouth are expected to make changes for tomorrow evening’s EFL Cup meeting with Aston Villa, with Marco Rose leaning toward rotation before three more huge games and the next International break. Ryan Christie is among the names likely to benefit, after playing only 25 minutes on Sunday and being earmarked to bring energy into the middle against fresher legs.
The predicted approach points to a side built for control rather than continuity. Michele Di Gregorio has kept clean sheets in his two appearances since arriving on loan from Juventus in the summer, while Adrien Truffert is viewed as one of the fittest players in the squad and Antonio Silva as one of the most seasoned when it comes to handling two games a week. Bafode Diakite has also looked more comfortable at the back under Rose, giving Bournemouth a base that can absorb changes without losing shape.
The selection picture is clearest in midfield and attack. Lewis Cook was excellent against Manchester United, but Christie’s short outing on Sunday makes him a logical candidate to start with more running in mind than heavy minutes. Justin Kluivert and Junior Kroupi are expected to share the same attacking role, Amine Adli has not started since returning from injury, and Marcus Tavernier is in line for a well deserved rest. Ben Gannon-Doak made a strong impact against Manchester United after coming off the bench, while Alvaro Rodriguez has looked more promising in his last few cameos and Evanilson is due a break before Leeds on Saturday.
There is a catch. Aston Villa may also rotate heavily, which means Bournemouth’s changes will not be the only factor shaping the match. That makes the bench almost as important as the starting XI, especially if the plan is to keep Petrovic, Smith, Adams, Tavernier, Rayan and Evanilson fresh for the weekend and still have enough quality on the pitch to stay in the game tomorrow. The next answer comes in the team sheet, but the bigger one will be whether Rose can protect his regulars without giving up control of the EFL Cup tie.
