Brewers Catcher William Contreras could become a winter trade candidate

William Contreras could be on the move this winter, and the Milwaukee Brewers do not have to decide his fate yet for it to matter. The starting Brewers catcher is entering the final year of his contract next season, and that alone has put a three-time All-Star back into the center of roster speculation.

He is being searched now because the clock is already moving on another catcher market. Tyler Stephenson is scheduled to become a free agent in the next month, which means the Cincinnati Reds will soon need a new catcher, and Contreras sits at the right intersection of age, production and availability to matter in that conversation.

This is not a simple case of a team reaching the end of control and getting pushed to deal a player before he walks. Contreras signed a one-year deal this past spring that included a team option for 2027, and his option is worth $14.5 million. MLB Trade Rumors projects he would make $14.6 million through arbitration, leaving Milwaukee with two expensive paths that land in almost the same place. Both figures would be higher than any other player on the Brewers roster not named Christian Yelich.

That is where the wrinkle comes in. Contreras has less than six years of service time, so even if Milwaukee declines the 2027 option, the Brewers could still control him for one more season. That makes a winter trade a choice, not a necessity. But the Brewers have already shown a willingness to move players while they still have value, having swapped Freddy Peralta, Devin Williams, Corbin Burnes and Willy Adames under that kind of logic.

So the question is not whether Contreras has value. He does. The question is whether Milwaukee prefers to keep a high-priced catcher for one more season, bank on the extra year of control and sort out the rest later, or test the market now while his name still carries the weight of a three-time All-Star. With the Reds about to enter their own catcher search and the Brewers rarely leaving expensive decisions to chance, Contreras is one of the winter's most plausible trade names, even if no move is guaranteed today.
